Fleas: Know your Foe!

IF YOU ARE FORTUNATE TO SPEND YOUR LIFE WITH AN ANIMAL, you will undoubtedly deal with fleas at one time or another. Veterinarians chuckle inside whenever we hear a pet owner state “my dog has never had a flea.” With spring around the corner, we will surely see more pets encountering them. One of the most common questions I field is how to control fleas naturally. Understanding the whole picture helps us see how this can be a difficult question to answer. This means understanding the biology and life cycle of the flea as well as how to minimize exposure to the substances we use to control them—our exposure, our pet’s exposure and that of our environment.
