Three Approaches
to Ear Infections
By Tracy MarcynzsynIF YOU’RE A PARENT, CHANCES ARE YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED EAR INFECTIONS. MOST KIDS HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE EAR INFECTION BY THE TIME THEY’RE 3 YEARS OLD. IN FACT, EAR INFECTIONS ARE SECOND TO THE COMMON COLD AS THE MOST COMMONLY DIAGNOSED CHILDHOOD ILLNESS IN THE UNITED STATES.
Children are more prone to ear infections than adults because the eustachian tube, the small passage connecting the middle ear to the back of the throat behind the nose, is short, narrow and horizontal until a child is about 6 years old, after which the tube grows into a more vertical position, allowing fluid to drain rather than remain in it.
